CJL Media Arts Group announces its "Artist in Residence: Kara Moats"
|We are pleased to announce that Kara Moats has been selected as the CJL Media Arts Group "Artist in Residence" for the 2016 Summer Program! Kara was a participating artist in The Mural Project @ CityCentre 2015 sponsored by CJL Media Arts Group.
The CJL Media Arts Group "Artist in Residence" 2016 Summer Program allows the selected Artist to have a space to create her artwork for purposes of taking time and space away from her usual environment and obligations. This provides a time of reflection, research, presentation and/or production. It also allows the Artist to explore her practice within another community, meet new people, use new materials, and paint in a new location. Art residencies emphasize the importance of meaningful and multi-layered cultural exchange and immersion into another culture.
Kara will be entering her junior year at Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, New York this Fall, where she will be focused on attaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. This promising young Artist has recently completed two successful years of undergraduate work at Pratt MWP [Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute] in Utica, NY where as a sophomore, Kara was awarded the Easton Pribble Memorial Award which followed on the heels of being named one of four "Outstanding Freshman."
While the "Artist in Residence" Kara will be working a series of paintings labeled "Speak." Says Kara about this series, "This series of paintings labeled, "Speak", re-tells my story. Through layers of various media, creating gestural marks, and organic forms. I use this series to continue healing not only myself, but other women who have endured, felt shamed, and been silenced by sexual assault and rape. The above questions propelled this series of paintings forward, as they are a constant reminder that I am more than a victim or a statistic."
"By persistently answering questions in my work, I expose my unedited autobiography, in hopes other people will be able to identify with any of my work and begin to search for their answers to these inescapable questions. I believe how we answer these questions individually, define our society, as a whole in which we live."
Kara Moats will be working in the Muir Art Gallery Annex during the week. Inquiries for commissions or workshops originating out of this Artist Residency Program are welcomed.
